Ontario permits many family court documents to be submitted online, but uploading a document is not the same as the court accepting or issuing it. Ottawa is outside the Toronto region, so the provincial instructions currently direct Ottawa family filings to Family Submissions Online. The document, court, deadline and any applicable rule, order, notice or practice direction still control.
Confirm that online filing is available for the step
Ontario says most family court documents may be submitted online, including materials for applications, answers, conferences, motions, motions to change, child-protection cases and certain appeals. That does not mean every document in every circumstance belongs in the same portal. Identify the court, file number, form and relief sought, and review the current court instructions before uploading.
Use the Ottawa pathway, not the Toronto-only portal
Starting October 14, 2025, Toronto-region family filings moved to the Ontario Courts Public Portal. The provincial page states that Family Submissions Online continues for family cases in regions outside Toronto, which includes Ottawa. Court technology and regional directions can change, so confirm the current link on the official Ontario page rather than relying on an old bookmark.
Do not use the portal for a three-business-day or urgent deadline
Ontario's filing page says online submission is unavailable to request an urgent hearing, for a court date three business days or less away, or where a deadline set by legislation, a rule, a practice direction or a court order is three business days or less away. In those situations, the page directs users to file in person or by email in accordance with the applicable rules, orders, notices and practice directions. Do not wait for portal review where the official restriction applies.
Prepare each document before starting the session
Complete, sign and date the current forms and have any affidavit sworn or affirmed where required. Save the documents as individual PDF or Word files, have the existing court file number available, and confirm how any filing fee or fee-waiver request will be handled. Review names, page order, signatures, dates, exhibits and file size before uploading.
Keep proof of what was submitted
For Family Submissions Online outside Toronto, Ontario advises keeping copies because the uploaded documents cannot be viewed online after submission. Save or print the on-screen confirmation and retain the exact files submitted. That record helps if the court asks for a correction, but it is not proof that the material has been accepted for filing.
Wait for acceptance—and separate filing from service
Court staff review online submissions and Ontario states that review may take up to three business days. If accepted, the court sends confirmation and the filed or issued document. If rejected, the email explains the reason and the documents must be corrected and resubmitted. Filing with the court does not automatically serve the other party; complete service and proof of service separately where the rules require them.
